Voters change choices after candidates drop out

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - More than half a dozen Democrats, including Tom Steyer, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, have dropped out of the race for president, but their names remain on the ballot.

Election offices have been taking calls from voters concerned about changing their choices.

Once the ballot is turned in, it is too late to change.

But San Luis Obispo County's Registrar of Voters said they will work to determine the voter's intent on ballots coming in after the changing lineup of candidates.

Clerk and recorder Tommy Gong said, "We instruct voters that they can cross out the candidate they no longer want, and fill in the oval next to the candidate they do want."

Election workers said voters should not write their initials next to a change.

Voters dropping off ballots said crossing out a candidate who had dropped out was not a problem.

Some voters said they have learned from this election cycle to wait until election day for the most accurate choices.
