San Salvador replica ship sails into Santa Barbara for Old Spanish Days

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In its 99th year, Old Spanish Days will have a strong maritime component to it. This year, the replica of the San Salvador ship will be in the Santa Barbara harbor on a special journey from its home port in San Diego.

This vessel was built between 2011 and 2015.

It was launched on  September 4, 2015.   It is docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The original San Salvador arrived in the port we now call San Diego on September 28, 1542 with Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in command.

El Presidente David Bolton says Old Spanish Days will have many new components to it this year including tours of the San Salvador which he announced Monday morning in a special presentation.

The waterfront area will be vibrant during Fiesta with the El Desfile Historico Parade taking place on Cabrillo Boulevard from Castillo St. to Milpas St. The parade begins at noon on August 4.

There will also be the Mercado de la Playa in the parking lot of Santa Barbara City College.

Old Spanish Days is the largest event of the year in Santa Barbara. It celebrates and honors the rich history here including, the Spanish, Mexican, Ranchero, Indigenous and Religious blends that create the story of the region.
