Sheriff’s office identifies inmate who died by apparent suicide at Santa Barbara Main Jail

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office identified the inmate who died by an apparent suicide on Saturday as Paul Howard Gillett, 64, of Santa Barbara.

The sheriff's office said Santa Barbara Police booked Gillett at the Main Jail on Sept. 29 for assault with a deadly weapon (felony), and battery (misdemeanor).

According to the sheriff's office, the 64-year-old was also being held on a court remand for a violation of probation for driving under the influence with a total bail of $45,000.

Although investigators believe his death to be a suicide, the sheriff's office said the final cause and manner of death is pending toxicology reports.
