Lompoc Unified hires more social-emotional support counselors for students

KEYT

LOMPOC, Calif. - Lompoc Unified School District announced it is hiring additional social emotional support counselors to help its students navigate the next school year.

“The focus will be on positive behavioral supports and social-emotional learning,” said Executive Director Brian Jaramillo. “Students have been through a very traumatic time and we want to provide them supports at every grade-level. School sites who have committed to implementing Positive Behavioral Intervention Systems or PBIS will have a school counselor to provide support campuswide in these areas. Almost all schools in LUSD have committed to the PBIS model for student behaviors.”

As of April, LUSD has hired a 12 more counselors for the following school year.

“This is going to be a game-changer for our students and provide them not only with skills for the school setting, but for life,” said Superintendent Trevor McDonald.

In November 2020, Lompoc Unified helped launch an anti-gang task force to reduce teen crime and violence in the city. This gave students access to counseling services, social-emotional services, and more to help steer youth away from gangs, drugs and violence. The taskforce officially launched in February 2021.

LUSD has also offered its staff mental and physical support through the building of a new fitness center.

“The well-being of our staff is incredibly important, especially during these times. When our staff are healthy and well, it not only is beneficial to them but improves the experience for our students as well,” Superintendent Trevor McDonald said at the time.
