Salvation Army could cut services due to financial struggles

The Salvation Army's biggest fundraiser of the year is just days away from its kick-off. 

While volunteers' are high in spirit, the organization's financial status has been low for the last two years.

“During kettle season, we really haven't been hitting our goals. Unfortunately because of that we've had to do some major budget cuts,” said Captain Patricia Torres with the Salvation Army.

Cuts have included closing down several positions in the social service office.

Torres said if the Salvation Army doesn't recover financially this year, there is a danger of more programs shutting down such as the hot lunch program and the rental and utility assistance program. 

There have been rumors that there won't be a toy distribution for this year. That is not true. This year for 2019, we will have our food and toy distribution program. We have our hot lunch and social service assistance. We're just in danger of not providing services for the future,” Torres said.

Workers are getting creative. While the kettle fundraiser is known to take place at shopping centers, there are now other ways to support the Salvation Army.

Donors can now donate to the Salvation Army's kettle online.

“Donors will be able to give through Google Pay and Apple Pay at the kettle sites,” Torres said.

This year's goal is to raise at least $105,000.

“My hope is to just bring joy to all the families,” said volunteer Jennifer Collins with the Salvation Army.
