Young Black Bear Spotted Strolling Through Pismo Beach Euthanized due to Serious Injury
PISMO BEACH, Calif. – A young black bear who spotted roaming parts of Pismo Beach before being removed from the area by a state biologist has been euthanized, according the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
According to the California Highway Patrol-San Luis Obispo Area, the Highway 101 offramp at Hinds Avenue was shut down as part of the response and the bear was ultimately discovered up a tree along the busy roadway.
Your News Channel was on the scene when a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife tranquilized the bear and prepared it for transport.
The young bear was taken to an area wildlife rehabilitation facility for x-rays and evaluation. Unfortunately, CDFW told your News Channel on Thursday the bear was euthanized after further examination showed it had been seriously injured, possibly due to being hit by a car.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife described the bear as a yearling. Observations indicated the bear was showing signs of injury before climbing into the tree.
The department also shared they believe a second bear, likely the mother of the yearling, may still be in the area but wildlife officers have not yet located it.
No injuries were reported as part of the response as officers followed up on tips about where the bear had been spotted including walking along Price Street and on the beach shared the Pismo Beach Police Department.
Anyone who spots a second bear should contact authorities immediately.
