Gelson’s gives back to Unity Shoppe

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — To help those in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Gelson's Market has partnered with the Unity Shoppe.
Today, the grocery store in Loreto Plaza is hosting a Give Back Day from 7 am till 10 pm.
Gelson’s will donate 5% of its sales from the day directly to the Unity Shoppe, which offers free groceries to struggling families and individuals.
“We are proud to be the recipient of Gelson’s Gives Back,” Unity Shoppe executive director Tom Reed said. “During these trying times, we are immensely grateful to be partnering with such a caring company.”
Throughout the day, many customers appreciate the opportunity to contribute to their community while shopping.
“The Unity Shoppe is experiencing a larger influx of people asking for help because of the pandemic,” Gelson's store director Steve Thomas said.
As a result of widespread unemployment throughout Santa Barbara, the Unity Shoppe is serving more than three times the number of families it typically assists during this time of year.
“Events like this today really help us move forward in filling those empty shelves,” Unity Shoppe administrative director Elvira Avina said. “Keeping them filled for those folks who are coming to our doors.”
This year, the Unity Shoppe has already helped over 10,000 people while distributing $645,000 in food supplies.
