Santa Barbara City Council votes to change name of local street
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to change a street name that had recently come under scrutiny.
The East Side Street in question is named Indio Muerto, which translates to "Dead Indian."
Council members voted to change the name to Hutash Street, which translates to "Earth Mother."
The street was originally named in 1851. A group of people recently asked the city to rename it, saying the name was an insult.
The Barbareno Chumash Tribal Council, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, and the Coastal Band of Chumash Indians all supported the name change.
Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo said there were some questions about the impact the name change could have on businesses along the street. She plans to meet with them to address any concerns.
