Bucket Brigade volunteers dig out elderly couple left in mud after Santa Barbara storms

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Bucket Brigade all volunteer group has rallied to help those left in mud from the recent rain events.

An elderly couple living on Bath Street found their property surrounded by muddy water when Mission Creek went over its banks. There was damage to two cars and many of their belongings outside of their home, but the inside held up.

Without the Bucket Brigade team mobilizing the owner said they would have had to clear the debris on their own because other options were running out.

Teresa Vaughan stood by her husband Richard, both in their 80's, and said, "I have been actually going around asking people to help me and I would be able to pay and nobody would even help.   I did not expect volunteers at all ."

The Bucket Brigade founder Abe Powell said,  "when people get hit by disasters they feel so alone and so scared and that's when neighbors can step up and give them hope  with just a little helping hand."

The Bucket Brigade is looking for more volunteers for projects tomorrow in Santa Barbara and one full-scale neighborhood project Saturday in Orcutt.

There many homes were damaged by gushing water and a sink hole.

The group formed after the Montecito disaster five years ago and has many residents recover especially those who are financially challenged or are underinsured.
