National Teen Driver Safety Week kicks off in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. — National Teen Driver Safety Week kicked off Monday, and California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Barbara County are providing tips for safe driving.

According to the CDC, car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens.

About 2,800 teens in the United States ages 13–19 were killed and about 227,000 teens were injured in car accidents in 2020.

Distracted driving, driving under the influence, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt can lead to tragic outcomes.

But there are ways to keep young drivers safe.

News Channel 3-12 spoke to Michael Griffith, California Highway Patrol Spokesperson in Buellton, who said parents must lead by example.

This can mean having driving sessions with your teen, setting ground rules about turning phones off while driving, and emphasizing the importance of sober driving.
