Oxnard man dies in 3-way crash on Highway 1 near Pt. Mugu State Park
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - California Highway Patrol responded to a fatal traffic collision involving three vehicles on Highway 1 near Deer Creek Road Friday morning.
The crash occurred around 11:44 a.m. between a 2002 International box truck, a 2002 Ford flatbed truck, and a 2011 Subaru SUV.
CHP explained in a news release that 61-year-old Ronald Baldonado was driving his Ford southbound on Hwy 1 and was slowing down to make a left turn onto Deer Creek Road.
A 42-year-old man from Oxnard was also driving southbound on Hwy 1 in his International truck behind Baldonado.
On the other side of the highway, 76-year-old James Buchanan was traveling northbound in his Subaru when, for reasons still under investigation, the Oxnard man failed to slow down behind Baldonado and collided with the rear of his vehicle.
The crash pushed Baldonado into the northbound lanes causing a collision with Buchanan's vehicle.
CHP said all three vehicles sustained major damage. While emergency personnel were responding, both north and southbound traffic was temporarily diverted on the right shoulder of the highway for about 2 hours.
Sadly, the Oxnard man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by fire department personnel. His identity will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
Baldonado sustained moderate injuries from the crash and Buchanan sustained major injuries. Both drivers were transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.
The crash is still being investigated by CHP. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to call Ventura Area CHP at (805) 662-2640.
