City, County and homeless keeping Cacique homeless camp clean during health crisis

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Shelter at home in California has been in place since March 19, however not everyone in California has a home to shelter in.

On March 22, the California Center for Disease Control issued an order to not breakup homeless encampments.

On Santa Barbara's Eastside, about 20 to 25 people sleep under the 101 overpass on Cacique Street.

On April 10, city officials placed a portable restroom, and with assistance from the county, placed a portable hand washing station for the encampment on Cacique Street.

Since the portable restroom was placed, the encampments cleanliness improved.

People living in the encampment sweep the sidewalks, city officials said.

Officials also say the portable restroom is cleaned twice a day and the trash that piles up is removed once a week.
