Girl found safe, father arrested in SLO County after Amber Alert

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - A 2-year-old girl who was abducted out of San Jose was found safe Monday at a Cambria gas station.

An Amber Alert was issued earlier in the morning for the young girl, who investigators say was taken by her father Sunday night.

San Jose police say Victor Magana, 24, of Gilroy stabbed his girlfriend around 10 p.m. and then took their daughter. The child's mother was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says someone spotted their vehicle at the Shell Station on Main Street in Cambria. Deputies say the father had apparently locked his keys in the car with the child inside, and witnesses then confronted him.

Those witnesses physically restrained the man until law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and took him into custody.

"While law enforcement is grateful for the assistance from the citizens who detained the suspect, we do not recommend approaching or confronting a person who is considered armed and dangerous. In situations like that we advise contacting law enforcement with the suspect's location and keeping a safe distance until law enforcement has the incident under control," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Deputies say State Park Rangers were first on scene and arrested the man.

The sheriff's office says the child was not hurt. She was turned over to County Child Welfare Services.

The Amber Alert was initially issued for several California counties including San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office is now working with San Jose police to coordinate the next steps.
