CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) – A new point-to-point transit service is rolling in Carpinteria as a convenience to those who don't have a car, or want to leave it behind.

"The Wave" is a mini van that comes to you, instead of always having to get to a bus stop to pick up a ride.

The Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) says it is the right fit for residents and tourists in the small town of Carpinteria.

Mary Gregg is the MTD Chief Operating Officer and says, "we think it will have a great impact on the opportunity for locals to be able to get around, go grocery shopping, doctors appointments, restaurants, night life and support all the local tourism that comes in to our community."

The van has seven seats. The driver may pick up other people on the drive, and still stay on time.

Gregg says, "the van may be headed to another location to pick up another person but the app will tell you when it is on the way. So that is a great feature of the app so you know when it will be showing up at your front door."

In addition to a specific spot where you may be standing and want to be picked up by the Wave, there are some designated spots that will have signs up for convenience, for example in a shopping area or at the train station.

Signs at those sites have a QR code with information and links.

The Wave will be running from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. This month the rides are free.

Afterwards they are $3.00 per trip and half off for seniors and those with disabilities.

Environmentally, this is going to be car free experience for many people who don't just live here but are visiting. "To be able to go to the State Park or come in on the train, leave their cars behind and visit our beautiful community here."
