Pacifica dominates McClymonds to win CIF State Div. 2A Championship

Pacifica wins state title
Pacifica ended its season 15-1 with CIF and state titles

NORWALK, Calif. - The Pacifica Tritons capped off an outstanding season in outstanding fashion.

Facing three-time defending state bowl champion McClymonds High School from Oakland, Pacifica jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

The Tritons stifled the Warriors en route to a 34-6 victory in Saturday's CIF State Div. 2A Championship Game at Cerritos College. Pacifica became the first public school in Ventura County to win a CIF state title.

RJ Maria threw four touchdown passes, while Kyrie Wilson and Malik Sherrod starred on both offense and defense.

Head coach Mike Moon even saw his son, receiver Isaiah Moon, catch a touchdown in the second half.

"After CIF this year we won every game in state,” Maria said. “Shows we're the best in the state now."

“It feels good being a state champ,” Receiver and cornerback Nohl Williams said. “I’m proud of my team and what we accomplished. It’s really a blessing. We just came out here and fought. That's all we did and we just came with a victory."

“It hasn't sunk in yet to be honest with you,” Coach Moon said. “But like I told them, I feel blessed to be here. Feel blessed to be with a group of boys, the way I look at it they trust me, their families trust me when they come to play for me at Pacifica. So reality is, if you hold the right kids accountable, love em up, you expect a lot from them, you support them, they're gonna achieve the world."

Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards attended the game and spoke with coach Moon before kickoff. Star Pacifica linebacker Caleb McCullough has committed to play for the Sun Devils.

The Tritons will graduate several seniors from this team, but they will go out on top after a memorable afternoon for Pacifica and the city of Oxnard.
