Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary saves local animals amidst storms and flooding

BUELLTON, Calif. -- Martha's Farm Animal Sanctuary in Buellton was able to save all of their farm animals amidst the torrential storm and flooding in recent weeks.

Founders Nikki and John Patterson say they had to bring all animals indoors to save them from the storm.

“We put some extra straw in and other mats to let them lie down and be dry and safe. Some of the animals love it like the ducks. We have the round most of the time loving it," said John.

The Patterson's say they realized which issue's needed fixing at the sanctuary after the heavy rainfall.

The main focus now is creating more indoor space, fencing, and preventing flood damage.

“We felt very fortunate. We were up on high ground. And all the animals here at Martha's Farm Animal Sanctuary have shelter. So that was incredibly fortunate that we had, that we realized we need that. We realize what we need to improve, that we're currently putting gravel in better for drainage," said Nikki.

The Patterson's say they provide shelter, food, and medical expenses for their animals all through donations.

The Patterson's have been saving and rescuing farm animals since 2013.

“We take animals that are abandoned, neglected, or simply need to be rehomed and provide them with a forever home where they can have a safe and caring and peaceful forever," said Nikki.

Their farm has cows, goats, ducks, pigs, and roosters who have all been rescued.

“Rescue organization that knows that a shelter can't care for farm animals. They mainly deal with dogs and cats in some cases. And they'll call us and say, We, we can't do it. We can't take care of this animal," said John.

One of their rescues was a pig they named sweetpea, she lost her owner to COVID-19.

The organization isn't open for public visits but is working with local mental health organizations to provide small group therapy sessions in the future.
