Inmate death from possible overdose at Northern Branch Jail

SANTA MARIA, Calif.– Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office announced that an inmate has died at the Northern Branch Jail.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office previously reported that the cause of death was from an overdose, but has since recalled that statement as deputies work to confirm the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death.

Sheriffs deputies were asked to conduct an independent outside investigation into a possible overdose death at the jail.

The investigation determined the individual was escorted into an observation cell upon arrival at the jail. Custody deputies administered Narcan and attempted reverse overdose measures before the person was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead, according to the SB Sheriff's report.

The individual had been arrested for violating their parole conditions in a check-the-welfare service call in the 800 block of Redwood Ave.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's continue to investigate the in-custody death. Identity and specific details remain unknown at this time.
