Local Physician Sees Rise in Colorectal Cancer in Young Patients

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - In a new study done by the American Cancer Society, nearly half of colorectal cancer cases are now being diagnosed in people under 50.

Doctors say call the trend alarming, as the colon and/or rectum disease traditionally affects older adults.

Dr. Vincent DeRosa, a gastroenterologist at Sutter Health, says lifestyle, genetics, and delayed screenings may all play a role.

DeRosa urges people to pay attention to symptoms and talk to their doctor about screening options sooner.
