ISLA VISTA, Calif. – In anticipation of numerous medical calls this weekend, many involving drug use, free Narcan has been distributed. Narcan is a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses and save lives.

Volunteers fanned out Wednesday afternoon for two hours, beginning on Del Playa Drive at Walter Capps Park.

A total of 900 boxes containing Narcan nasal spray were distributed to residents, along with safety information about the often-dangerous bluffs.

Santa Barbara County Supervisor Laura Capps and her staff coordinated the distribution with the help of 56 volunteers.

The effort was carried out in collaboration with the County Department of Behavioral Wellness, the Isla Vista Community Services District, and UC Santa Barbara's Associated Students.

Another distribution, with approximately 100 kits, is scheduled for Saturday morning.
