Semester at Sea Launches new alumni network

Tracy Lehr / KEYT

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) The Central Coast is home to more than 1,000 Semester at Sea alumni.

And now there is a new alumni network online for the floating study abroad program that began in the 1960s.

Alumni attended a reunion in Santa Barbara on Sunday and had a chance to check out video of the new chartered ship Oceania Sirena.

The floating university will begin a new partnership with the University of San Diego in the Spring of 2028.

Some Semester at Sea alum met their mates on board.

Christina and Chris Hanna of Santa Barbara went viral when they got engaged on their Fall voyage in 2018.

They now have two children.

"We are also encouraging alumni from Semester at Sea to sign up on the alumni board and it is a way for folks to connect if you have a business or something you can do that ways to connect with your individual voyages, so, please sign up and we hope to see you at the next reunion," said reunion host Roane Akchurin.

"She says SASers and I say Shippies , old school, love all you guys and thanks for keeping the family together, Semester at Sea forever!" said Ric Swanky Hovsepian.

Alumni plan to have reunions throughout the year.
