SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The City of Santa Maria will pick up Christmas trees for free the week after New Year's Day.

The city said Thursday it would pick up trees that are left out during the week of January 6 through January 10.

People are asked to leave their Christmas tree on the curb at least three feet away from their trash containers on their scheduled trash pickup day. Ornaments, tinsel, and stands need to be removed. Flocked trees will not be picked up.

Trees that are cut up in pieces can be placed in green waste containers.

People will be charged for trees picked up after January 10.

The city also said there will be no trash pickup or street sweeping on New Year's Day. Landfill and city administrative offices are also scheduled to be closed on New Year's Day, but will reopen January 2.
