SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — A three-day conference for festival creators, FestForums filled the Mar Monte Hotel in Santa Barbara.

Festival organizers from around the world attended the festival to discuss topics such as talent booking, marketing, and challenges in the wake of COVID-19, recent wildfires, and the political climate surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Montecito resident and champion surfer Shaun Tomson delivered the opening keynote on Wednesday.

"It is great to be at this event. We are living in a turbulent, broken world, and these festivals bring people together, creating a sense of community," Tomson said. "I'm going to be talking about purpose with a unique Santa Barbara feel, so I'm really looking forward to spreading the word and creating a positive wave of hope and purpose around the world."

Tomson also shared a personal story about a special day at the beach with his late son, Mathew, when he was 10 years old.

He encouraged attendees to join him at a free screening of Bustin' Down the Door at the Arlington Theatre. The 50th-anniversary screening was part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which is also taking place this past week. The film tells the story of young surfers who transformed the sport.

FestForums, which focuses on festivals of all kinds—from music to food—was founded a decade ago by Laurie Kirby to connect festival organizers.

"There is nothing like it," Kirby said. "This year, I am honoring the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Isle of Wight Festival promoters, but we also have folks from Coachella, Burning Man, Sundance, and festivals from all over the world."

Vendors are showcasing the latest festival technology, along with coffee, tea, T-shirts, and more.

Actor Matthew Modine gave the keynote speech. The event also featured an artist showcase and a benefit concert for fire relief.

Artists included Alan Parsons and Sophie B. Hawkins.

FestForum wrapped up on Friday.
