County of San Luis Obispo Public Health: Every Woman Counts

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - Your NewsChannel team is shining a light on Every Woman Counts, a statewide program geared for California's uninsured and under-insured population.

April Smith, a Nurse Practitioner with San Luis Obispo County Public Health, joined us live via Zoom Wednesday afternoon to share more information about this crucial program.

Smith said eligible people with symptoms are encouraged to come in for an exam.

Cervical cancer screenings are recommended for women starting at the age of 21. Breast cancer screenings are recommended beginning at age 40.

She added that health screenings under the Every Woman Counts program are not just for women.

"We refer men and women to additional screenings if needed. We refer them to x-rays, mammograms and Every Woman Counts does pay for those additional screenings."
