A behind-the-scenes look at SoFi Stadium, the new home of the Los Angeles Rams
LOS ANGELES - Southern California's NFL teams will be calling a new location home this coming season.
The Los Angeles Rams and Chargers will kick off their 2020-21 football seasons this week, and this year each team will have a new place to call home: SoFi Stadium.
The state-of-the-art facility is located in Inglewood, the previous site of the Hollywood Park racetrack. The new football stadium is the crown jewel of the new Hollywood Park, a sports and entertainment complex developed by the Kroenke family, owners of the LA Rams.
The new stadium is the largest in the NFL at 3.1 million square feet. It can seat between 70,000 and 100,000, but each seat offers great views of the action thanks to the largest video board ever created. The video board weighs 2.2 million pounds and is larger than the field itself.
NewsChannel Sports Director Mike Klan and General Manager Mark Danielson got to tour the new digs prior to the official ribbon cutting, which was held remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
SoFi Stadium will be the home turf for both the Rams and Chargers, but other major events are planned to take place there in the near future. In 2022, Super Bowl LVI will be played at SoFi and the following year the stadium will host the College Football National Championship game. Opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Summer Olympics will be held at the park as well.
The Rams will get the first home game at SoFi. The team hosts the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
The Chargers first home game is the following week when the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs travel to Inglewood.
