SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Santa Barbara High School Class of 2020 are now graduates. Monday SBHS hosted a graduation ceremony for their seniors and their families.

They cheered, they clapped, they took pictures from their cars and most importantly, the seniors walked.

Graduate Kiana King-Seabra said, "I think this is better. I wanted to do something, I wanted to remember it. And every other year got to graduate so I'm glad we got to do this."

Tyler Lewis added about his class' graduation, "It's kind of fun. It's a lot more personalized I feel like than a big graduation would be."

Graduates drove up with their families in decorated cars, dropped off any school supplies they still had and got ready for graduation. Then they hopped out of those cars, followed blue arrows on campus and walked for their diploma.

Principal Elise Simmons said when the coronavirus is no longer a concern, the Class of 2020 will be the first to have a ceremony on the newly renovated football field.

"I think would be better than an actual graduation," said Lewis. "So I would rather come back in a year and be able to see all of my friends once again after a year has passed rather than just see them and never see them again."

And to the graduates, Principal Simmons leaves them with this message.

"Congratulations Class of 2020. I'm really proud of you, proud of all the hard work. You worked really hard up until this point. And I know you will continue to work hard in life. And enjoy it. Have a wonderful day, congratulations," said Principal Simmons.
