Claims of coronavirus cases at Santa Maria High School a hoax, administrators say

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A report of coronavirus cases at Santa Maria High School that has been circulating online is a hoax, according to the school district.

The Santa Maria Joint Unified High School District says they have contacted law enforcement regarding a text hoax that has been circulating on social media.

The text claims that there have been four confirmed cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) in Santa Barbara High School, with two such cases affecting people at Santa Maria High School.

The school district reaffirmed that there have been no cases of the disease within the school district, and according to Santa Barbara County Public Health officials, there have been no confirmed cases throughout all of Santa Barbara County.

Students, parents and staff in the district have been notified.

Anyone with information about the hoax is urged to contact the Santa Maria Police Department at 805-928-3781.
