CIF-SS Flag Football First Round: Dons fall in double-overtime heartbreaker
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) -
CIF-SS Division 2 First Round: Villa Park 20, Santa Barbara 19 (2OT): The Dons first flag football playoff game in program history was a memorable one!
After Santa Barbara and Villa Park were scoreless for the first three and a half quarters, both teams finished with a flurry of points.
Santa Barbara tied the game at 6 with 2:23 left on a 10-yard touchdown run by Lanaya Solis.
(Following an interception by Lena Fackler (#21), the Dons took over at the Spartans 35-yard line. Entenza Design).
The Dons took advantage of the short field after the turnover and Solis scored her second touchdown, a 3-yard run and with the extra point Santa Barbara led 13-6 with just :40 seconds left.
But Villa Park completed a long pass to Scarlett Brynes and when Maddie Stohl pulled the flag the scoreboard clock went to zero. But the officials put one second on the clock and the Spartans scored on an 11-yard touchdown catch by Brynes. The Dons tipped the pass on the extra-point but Stella Gogan dove and caught it to tie the game at 13 and send this first round game into overtime.
The Dons had the ball first in overtime and scored as Lylee Harris threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Alina Stump. The Dons did not convert the extra-point so they led 19-13.
The Spartans answered with a touchdown catch by Gogan but they also missed the point after so the game went to a second overtime.
In the second overtime each team gets to try an extra-point until one team wins.
The Spartans converted their attempt as Gogan pulled in another tipped pass.
The Dons swung a pass to Stump on their extra-point try but she was stopped just shy of the goal line and that set off a wild celebration by the visitors.
Santa Barbara ends their historic season in heartbreaking fashion and finish up 14-5.
