Local College Football: Cal Poly upset at home; woes continue for SBCC

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) -

San Diego 38, Cal Poly 35: It was not a happy homecoming for the Mustangs as Emiliano Salazar drilled a 38-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to give the non-scholarship San Diego Toreros a 38-35 win in front of 10,259 at Spanos Stadium.

Tayvion McCoy and Fide Pitts caught touchdown passes in the second half as Cal Poly erased a 14-point deficit to tie the score at 35.

Quarterback Anthony Grigsby Jr. threw for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Mustangs and Jaden Green finished with a Cal Poly-best 126 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Former Bishop Diego High School star Misa Paiau tied the game at 14 in the second quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run but he hobbled into the end zone with an injury and did not return.

Cal Poly returns to Big Sky action when visiting Eastern Washington on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff on ESPN+ from Roos Field is 4 p.m. for Cal Poly (2-2, 1-0), which defeated Idaho in its Aug. 28 Big Sky opener, 38-34.

Junior College: Long Beach 30, Santa Barbara 0: In a matchup of winless teams SBCC was dominated on the road as they were outgained 461 to 134 in total yards. The Vaqueros (0-4) were held to 2 rushing yards. SBCC hosts Ventura on Saturday, Sept 26.

Moorpark 28, Ventura 27 (OT): The Raiders snapped 17-game losing skid in the Citrus Cup by stopping a 2-point conversion try in overtime.

Sirwan Evans connected with Anthony Garcia on a 11-yard touchdown pass in overtime for Moorpark (1-3).

Braden Graham answered the overtime score with a 22-yard touchdown strike to Jude Walker but the Pirates (2-2) came up short.

Hancock 21, Santa Ana 14: Nuhsi Valenti rushed for 2 touchdowns and Cruz Palabucki added another score on the ground for the winning Bulldogs (2-2). Both teams played a scoreless first half.
