Record-breaking heat wave: cooling begins Thursday

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Wednesday's record-breaking heat wave drove temperatures into the 90s and 100s.

Santa Maria Airport heated to 102.

Santa Barbara Airport reached 97.

These both broke records set on Sept 9 in 1984.

Some cooling will begin Thursday but temperatures will still be hot in the 80s and 90s with extreme heat alerts in effect.

Temperatures will return to the 70s over the weekend with near average temperatures to follow into next week.
