Eye on the tropics, forecast for Monday Aug 31st

Cooler ocean breezes and weakening high pressure overhead has brought further cooling to the region. Look for the onshore flow to hold with more patchy fog along the coast and breezy westerly winds. Overnight lows will be mostly in the 50's and 60's. Highs on Monday will be in the 60's and 70's near the coast with mostly 80's . Wind from the northwest this evening will kick up again near the Gaviota coast which means a Wind Advisory could be issued and if it is, we will update our forecast right here as soon as possible.

Looking ahead, Mother Nature will continue to cool things down through early next week with more fog and seasonal temperatures. We still will need to keep an eye on some tropical moisture drifting up from the south off the Pacific making for some very slight thunder chances over the mountains. Overall it looks like a very quiet and nice way to end August and ring in September, but some interesting things are brewing in our very warm ocean to our south. Tropical Storm Karina is expected to continue to strengthen and churn her way north along the coast of Baja. Surf will likely pick up from the south with not only Karina energy, but also another swell from the Southern Hemisphere by late in the work week. Following just behind Karina could be Marie which is where things get interesting. Marie has the potential to stay pretty close to Baja and then Southern California. Some of our forecast models put the storm's rain path right over our region by either Sunday the 6th or Labor Day the 7th. This will need close monitoring as trajectory and timing will likely evolve and change through next week. This is not unprecedented, but heavy rain from tropical systems is a pretty rare event. Our eyes will be glued to our forecast models and we will update you all week with regard to what the holiday weekend will bring.
