Rain chances begin again Friday, lasting through the long weekend

Temperatures will drop slightly Friday as more wet weather approaches the region. Most coastal highs will be in the upper 50s to mid 60s. The interior will be in the mid 50s to 60s.

Clouds will gradually increase ahead of the first iteration of our next system. Rain showers will begin in the early afternoon on the Central Coast and fizzle in the evening.

The low will move to the west of Oregon Saturday. Lighter rain will move over the region in the early morning and get heavier in the afternoon. We will see 3 to 6 hours of moderate to heavy rainfall. Rain rates are expected to stay around a half inch per hour.

In total, we are expecting three quarters to one and a half inches of rain for coastal areas, and one and a half to three inches for foothills and mountains. Snow will fall at 6,000 feet. Though the storm is less significant than the last, areas that are still dealing with storm impacts or that are prone to roadway flooding and hazards should take extra caution.

There is a high surf advisory until 10:00 pm Saturday on the Central and South Coasts, with breaking waves at 12 to 18 feet and 6 to 10 feet respectively. The Ventura coast is under a high surf warning, also until 10:00 pm Saturday, with waves at 9 to 13 feet. Local sets may be a few feet higher.

South to southwest winds will be strong in the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County mountains. A wind advisory is in effect until 4:00 pm Friday with gusts up to 45 mph. In addition, a high wind watch is in effect from noon Saturday to 9:00 pm Saturday with gusts up to 60 mph.

We have a breather Sunday morning before the second system moves in Sunday night with rain showers, tapering off Monday, Martin Luther King Day. This system will be colder, and snow levels will drop to 4,500 feet. Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal.

High pressure will build into the region Tuesday and the region will dry out. The morning will be chilly. Conditions stay dry with periods of cloud cover and sun. There will be little change in the weather Wednesday.
