Former SBCC Football star Brandon Smith arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Running back Brandon Smith was one of four people arrested on June 7 and charged with attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy following an altercation near a community pool at the Forte Ranch condos on June 2 that left a 20-year old man with serious injuries.
The former Santa Barbara City College football standout Smith is being held in jail on a $2 million dollar bond.
According to a June 8 article by Noozhawk, the other three men arrested were Jordan Alexander Lopez, 20, and Jude Issam Hallal, 19, both of Santa Barbara, and Michael Christian Lee, 21, of Goleta.
Santa Barbara County sheriff's detectives believe the four suspects and the victim knew each other.
The incident on June 2 came just hours after Smith announced on social media that he was committing to play football at Pac-12 school Oregon State.
But following his arrest Oregon State said that Smith will no longer be a part of the program as no scholarship papers were signed yet by the running back.
Smith ran for over 1,200 yards last season for the Vaqueros and his 16 touchdowns set a new single-season record at SBCC.
He led the Vaqueros to a 10-1 record and a Beach Bowl victory where he was named MVP after rushing for 200 yards.
Last month Smith was named the College Football Player of the Year for the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
