Santa Maria man identified as person killed in crash near Los Alamos

Santa Barbara County Fire Department

LOS ALAMOS, Calif. - A 21-year-old Santa Maria man has been identified as the person killed in a crash near Los Alamos over the weekend.

California Highway Patrol identified the man as Angel Morales of Santa Maria.

Morales was found dead at the scene of the crash which was discovered around 6:30 a.m. off Highway 101 near the Solomon Grade between Orcutt and Los Alamos. CHP said the exact time of the crash was unclear but it is believed it occurred the previous night and went undiscovered for several hours.

CHP said Morales was driving a 2016 Lexus at an extremely-high rate of speed on US 101 south. As he came over the summit of a hill, the vehicle drifted into the median. The driver is then believed to have overcorrected, sending the vehicle off the roadway and leading it to roll multiple times.

Morales was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the wreck. He died at the scene of the crash.

The crash is under investigation. CHP said it's unclear if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Another crash in the same general area sent two people to the hospital Sunday afternoon.
