Less-Than-Lethal Rounds and K-9 Unit Used to End Standoff on North Bentley Wednesday

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – A 27-year-old man was arrested on charges of elder abuse, resisting an officer, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and probation violation after he refused to let his family leave a North Bentley Avenue home Wednesday evening.

On Sep. 2, around 6:30 p.m., officers responded to a home in the 2400 block of North Bentley Avenue for a reported family disturbance stated a press release from the Santa Maria Police Department.

Arriving officers learned that a man, later identified as a 27-year-old, was under the influence and was preventing his family from leaving the home against their will shared the local police department.

Officers established a perimeter around the home and attempted to deescalate the incident using a public address (PA) system to establish communications with the 27-year-old explained the Santa Maria Police Department.

According to Santa Maria Police, the 27-year-old declined to comply with the directions of officers and instead exited the home and "charged toward officers" and "assumed a fighting stance" while challenging officers and continuing to advance.

Officers deployed a 40mm less-than-lethal round and when the 27-year-old continued to advance towards assembled officers, a police K-9 unit and a second less-than-lethal round were used to take him into custody noted the Santa Maria Police Department.

The 27-year-old was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and was booked on charges of elder abuse, resisting a peace officer, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and violation of probation conditions after being medically cleared detailed the local law enforcement agency.

According to custody information from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, the 27-year-old is being held on a $260,000 bail and remains in custody.

The Santa Maria Police Department added that the incident remains under investigation.
