Sheriff’s office identified man killed in HWY 1 crash near Lompoc

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has identified a man killed in a crash on Highway 1 south of Lompoc Sunday.

According to the sheriff's office, 37-year-old Daniel Pablo Duarte of Santa Barbara was killed Sunday night after his vehicle went over the side of Highway 1 north of Jalama.

At around 5:30 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded with several engines along with assistance from a CALSTAR helicopter.

California Highway Patrol said the vehicle was about 30 feet off the roadway and stuck in a tree. Crews had to use "extensive extrication" to get the Duarte out of the car.

Duarte was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital where he later died.

The highway was reopened about 45 minutes after crews responded on scene.

The crash remains under investigation by CHP.
