Trenidad Castilleja died last month from fentanyl ingestion while at San Luis Obispo County Jail

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – On Friday, the Coroner's Unit confirmed that Trenidad Castilleja, a 48-year-old who passed away in March while detained at the County Jail, died from fentanyl ingestion and hypertensive cardiovascular disease was noted as a significant contributing factor.

On March 15, around 9 p.m., custody personnel and nursing staff attempted to revive Castilleja during medication dispersal shared the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

Despite those attempts, Castilleja was pronounced dead the same evening.

He was detained in the San Luis Obispo County Jail at the time while awaiting sentencing and has been booked into the facility over 24 times since 1998 noted the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's shared that how exactly Castilleja came into possession of the fentanyl while detained remains under investigation.
