San Luis Obispo County to test Early Warning System sirens Tuesday and Wednesday
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. – The Early Warning System sirens at Diablo Canyon Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) will undergo scheduled low-volume growl tests on Tuesday and Wednesday (Jul. 25 and 26).
Each of the 131 sirens throughout the EPZ will be tested individually for a period of a few seconds.
These required tests help emergency officials ensure the siren system is working properly and ready for use in an emergency detail San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services (SLOCOES).
According to SLOCOES, the Early Warning System sirens were installed and are maintained as one of the requirements related to the operation of Diablo Canyon Power Plant, but can be used for any local emergency including tsunamis, dam failure, or other natural or man-made disaster.
In the event of an emergency, the sounding of the sirens is an indication the Emergency Alert System has been activated and the public should tune in to a local television or radio station for information and instructions.
The Early Warning System sirens cover an area extending from Cayucos to the north to the Nipomo Mesa in the south.
