Nipomo Man falls to his death at Pirate’s Cove near Avila Beach on Wednesday

AVILA BEACH, Calif. – Nipomo resident, 33-year-old Francisco Javier Velasco Garcia, was declared dead at the scene of a cliff rescue on Wednesday after falling at Pirate's Cove near Avila Beach.

According to San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department, Garcia was found with no pulse and not breathing by first responders and was declared dead on the scene.

Witness statements shared by San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies describe Garcia as sitting on the cliff overlooking the water and when he got up to leave, lost his balance and fell backward over 200 feet to the cliffs below.

At this time, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office detail that Garcia's death appears to be accidental.

Garcia's family has created a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of his funeral.
