Surfer Dave Rastovich shares documentary "Sensing Home" at Patagonia in Ventura

VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) Patagonia hosted "Out The Back "surf events in Ventura.

Pro surfer Dave Rastovich told his story about getting sick from runoff in the documentary "Sensing Home."

People packed Patagonia's back patio in Ventura on Friday night to watch the film that shows surfers sailing to areas where river run off enters the ocean in Australia.

Rastovich said surfers are like canaries in the coal mine, if the water is sickm, surfers get sick, too.

"We've come here to share a film about river health and river side communities and a host of people looking after country in Australia and it just feel great to come here because there are so many great people in this Ventura community," said Rastovich.

Proceeds of the even benefited the Surfrider Foundation that is working to protect the coast.

Organizers shared the progress being made along the beaches in Bentura

But there is still work to be done.
