SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) - The Santa Maria-Bonita School District (SMBSD) is asking parents and guardians to complete an online survey regarding student technology use.

The short survey includes about 15 questions and only takes a few mintues to complete.

"Technology is clearly in a very important tool here at the Santa Maria," said Samantha Scroggin, SMBSD Public Information Officer. "But in a school district, it's something that our teachers and classrooms really use daily, so we really acknowledge the importance and the use of technology. However, we want to have a healthy balance of technology use."

The survey is available in both English and Spanish and can be accessed through the SMBSD website.

SMBSD said in a release the survey is part of an ongoing district initiative to ensure that student device use effectively supports academic learning while protecting student well-being.

"Finding a healthy balance of technology use is all of our responsibilities," said Scroggin. "The teachers, the school administrators and the parents and so that's why we are asking for this input on this technology survey from our families."

Previous to the parent online survey, SMBSD has also received input on techology useage from many of its teachers as well.

"We were fortunate to have 500 responses from our teachers, giving very valuable feedback about technology use in the classroom," said Scroggin. "Now we are seeking feedback from our parents grandparents, and guardians about what they're seeing at home, particularly related to technology from this classroom. The devices that are coming home from the classrooms. We want to hear about how they're being used at home and how that's working out for the families."

SMBSD added the community feedback collected from the survey will directly guide future district practices as it aims to make thoughtful, age-appropriate decisions that balance the educational benefits of technology with healthy digital habits and active family involvement.

The participation window for parental feedback ends on Friday, July 17, 2026.
