Bakersfield migrant students spend part of summer for algebra academy at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Bakersfield non-profit organization brings migrant students to UC Santa Barbara for a summer algebra academy

‘Youth 2 Leaders Education Foundation’ is hosting over 100 migrant students and having a chance to live the college experience on campus.

This is a partnership with UCSB. Students will engage in activities that inspire, motivate, and challenge them to take risks while learning from a curriculum with opportunities. This is for students to reason, share knowledge, and build on what they already know about algebra.

Although math is the primary reason why the Central Valley students are here, the non-profit gives them an opportunity to see the beautiful city of Santa Barbara.

"We have different activities for them to again expose them to things outside of their neighborhood or the town that they grew up in," said Youth 2 Leaders Education Foundation Executive Director Gabriel Adame. “I've had a few students come up to me saying that they're having such a great time. You know, we've been here since Sunday, this past Sunday, and being able to see the difference of them that Sunday."

The Summer Algebra Academy runs until July 15th. Every week, the non-profit hosts a different school district from Kern County.

Students also get to live the college experience by staying at the dorms while they're here.
