Santa Maria PD investigating fatal shooting; victim died driving away from scene

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The Santa Maria Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting after the victim was found dead on a Highway 101 on-ramp.

The shooting occurred behind at 7-Eleven convenience store on Grant Street near North Broadway Friday morning. The victim was found on the on-ramp between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

Police tell our crews at the scene that the victim drove away from the shooting and attempted to get on the freeway, but died from their injuries on the northbound on-ramp at North Broadway.

The identity of the victim has not been released. The car involved is a black Chrysler sedan. The victim's body remained at the scene for several hours Friday.

The Santa Maria Police Department crime lab vehicle arrived at the scene to investigate.

Both on-ramps at North Broadway were closed by Caltrans as police investigated.
