Reports of student with gun locked down Santa Maria High, reports deemed unfounded
SANTA MARIA, Calif. – Santa Maria High School was placed on lockdown for roughly an hour Monday morning after police received reports of a student with a firearm, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.
The reports came in around 10:55 a.m., and the school was immediately placed on lockdown.
The school was placed on lockdown "as a precautionary measure" after receiving a tip that there may be a weapon on campus, according to Santa Maria Joint Union High School District spokesman Kenny Klein.
Officers responded and contacted the student suspect. The department said that no guns were found and no shots were made, but that the student had been detained.
"SMPD and school staff conducted a search with the individuals in question and determined the threat unfounded," Klein added.
The lockdown was lifted around 11:50 a.m., according to the police department.
Klein said that all students and staff "are safe and sound" and that normal school activities have resumed.
