Sheared fire hydrant floods Atascadero neighborhood

A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after taking out a fire hydrant Thursday night.

Police say Andre Victor slammed into a fire hydrant in front of an Atasacadero woman’s house, causing water to pour into the front yard and damaging her property.

“It definitely feels like something you would see in the movies and you would never expect it to happen to you,” said homeowner Aleah Wray said.

The car crashed into the hydrant near the intersection of Portola Road and Morro Road.

The explosion of water poured down for over 45 minutes and could not be turned off until the water department arrived from Paso Robles.

“Our entire property ended up being covered in about a foot of water,” Wray said. “It was coming through windows, it was just everywhere.”

Wray says the water caused so much damage that the floors in the entire house were ruined.

Other homes were also damaged by the downpour and some residents were forced to evacuate.

Wray claims she saw law enforcement pulling bottles of alcohol out of victor’s car.

She and her husband will be staying in a hotel for the next few days.
