Gusty weather problematic for some allergy sufferers

The winds are blowing and so are people’s noses.

While Spring is a common time of year for allergies, windy days like Thursday make them even worse.

“Wind is very challenging especially during the spring time because we have a lot of outdoor pollen. Right now we have a lot of tree pollen and we’re starting to get into the grass season so all of these require the wind to help pollinate and they are at high levels now,” explained allergy specialist, Dr. Vincent Tubiolo.

For allergy sufferers like Carmen Cortez, tissues are vital for her walks through the park.

“My eyes are watery.. my nose is runny.. it’s very hard to deal with,” she said.

Running errands can be difficult for people with allergies as well.

“Everything kicks up in the air, you get a lot of allergies, a lot of pollen floating around, harder breathing, nose runny and it’s really hard especially on the older generation,” said allergy sufferer Leonard Jalbert.

Dr. Tubiolo says there are some natural remedies you can take to stop common allergy symptoms.

“Some simple things you can try during a season like this especially when it’s windy and dry is just some nasal saline – saltwater rinses are effective in clearing the mucus and some of the symptoms,” he said.

There are also dozens of over the counter medications that can treat these symptoms, but if they don’t work – it could be time to see a doctor.

“Any time it seems like it’s not effective or there’s some side effect from the medication, they should see a physician about that,” Dr. Tubiolo said.
