Remains found at Kristin Smart search site
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that remains, of animal or human, have been found in their search for Kristin Smart’s body.
This week, investigators with the sheriff’s office and FBI excavated three areas of interests near the campus’ iconic hilltop “P” on the Cal Poly campus.
The FBI concluded its excavation project on Friday on the Cal Poly campus . The purpose of the excavation was to determine if the remains of Kristin Smart or other evidence were buried on that property.
Kristin is the Cal Poly student who went missing in May, 1996. On 9-6-16, the FBI’s Evidence Recovery Team began excavating three sites on a hillside near the Cal Poly “P” landmark. Items of interest were found at all three sites. Those items are now being further analyzed to determine if they are related to the Kristin Smart investigation.
Of those items, remains were found according to the sheriff’s office. Forensic anthropologists and other experts are now looking at the remains and this process could take days or weeks.
The Sheriff’s Office is stressing that these remains still need to be analyzed to see if they are animal or human and if they are related to this case.
