Dons boys basketball clinches at least a share of Channel League crown
After starting off Channel League play at 1-3, Santa Barbara High School has reeled off seven straight wins to secure at the very least a share of the league championship. Behind 25 points and 12 rebounds from Jack Baker, the Dons defeated visiting San Marcos 60-50 to take a one game lead in the Channel League with one game left.
They host Dos Pueblos on Thursday and need a win to clinch the outright title. A DP win would give the Chargers a share of the championship. San Marcos can also gain a piece of the league title with a win over Buena and a DP victory.
Baker scored 13 first half points which was one shy than the entire Royals team had at intermission as the Dons led 23-14.
Kevin Hempy led the Royals with 22 points and his lay-in with just over four minutes left in the third quarter cut the deficit to 28-24. But the Royals never got any closer thanks to Baker and Emilio Gonzalez. After sitting out most of the first half with foul trouble, Gonzalez scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as the Dons improve to 8-3 in league and 19-4 for the season. San Marcos falls into a second place tie with Dos Pueblos at 7-4.
