Las Positas pathway finishes safe connection for bikes and pedestrians
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A 2.6-mile multi-use pathway is now open in Santa Barbara connecting Modoc Rd. and Las Positas Rd. to an open space area and the popular Hendry's Beach area.
It is expected to be used by bikers, pedestrians, and runners in a safe, shared space.
The project is a key connection to the coastal bike route that will link Goleta to Ventura.
At a special ceremony Thursday morning, Mayor Randy Rowse recalled how complex it was to put all the pieces together through land acquisition, property ownership agreements and community support.
"It's fabulous to have this be the culmination of so many efforts, getting the road relinquished from Caltrans the creek restoration, the park aquisition, the bridge, all the things we've talked about for as long as I can remember being in town and we are finally here which is just fabulous and a big hand to the community for support this so thank you," said Rowse.
Still getting into the role of ribbon cutter, Rowse pulled out a large pair of scissors and officially snipped a red ribbon to the sound of cheers.
Top city and county officials past and present were on hand from elected leaders to members of parks, public works and creeks departments.
The celebration of this path continues Saturday morning where free McConnell's ice cream coupons will be handed out. Councilmember Mike Jordan will be among those walking the area with the special gifts.
