25th Caregivers Sailathon Sets Sail

VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) Sailors took part in the annual Caregivers Sailathon off the coast of Ventura on Sunday.

Andy and Tina Killion created the Caregivers Sailathon 25 years ago.

One of the best places to watch is from the beach or on the Ventura Pier.

Sailors come about again and again around a yellow buoy near the end of the pier.

It isn't just sailboats...all kinds of boats including outriggers are welcome to take part each year.

Volunteers say the money raised helps people navigate their in home care.

Sailor and volunteer Bob Shirley called the Sailathon a fun way to earn money for a good cause.

"We just completed the Caregivers Sailathon , caregivers assist the elderly, helping them stay independent in their own homes as long as possible and the Sailathon earns then about 10 percent of their budget I believe we had a beautiful day on the water with a bunch of fun people on the boat," said Shirley.

They like to say they are searching for the mystical "Ugly Fish."

That is also the name of the award given for participation.

Sailors enjoyed what looked like picture-perfect day.
