State Historical Resources Commission scheduled to consider Lompoc site for federal designation
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. – Thirteen nominations are scheduled for consideration for federal historic designation by the California State Historical Resources Commission on Friday, Aug. 4 including the Mission La Purísma at 'Amuwu District in Lompoc.
The 9:30 a.m. meeting can be joined by the public online or in person at the California Natural Resources Headquarters Building in Sacramento.
The Mission La Purísma at 'Amuwu District is the first nomination updated in association with the Native Americans and the California Mission System 1769-1848 Multiple Property Submission.
The site served as a pivotal location in the largest Native American rebellion against the Spanish on North America's West Coast detail the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
The nominated Lompoc site includes the casco (headquarters) and primary aqueduct system for the second site of Mission La Purísma, in operation from 1813 to 1835, and was established at a location known to the indigenous Chumash people as 'Amuwu.
Mission La Purísma was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
